Sirocco Marine North is an Australian company which manufactures a full range of inflatable boats.
The Lite series is available in 2m, 2.2m and 2.4m lengths; the standard Roll-up Tenders are 2m and 2.3m; the Air Hull boats feature a revolutionary double-skin vee-bottom (2.2m – 3.5m) ; and the family of fibreglass-hulled RIBs ranges from 2.4m to 3.4m. They also import the world renowned Brig Inflatables from Europe. Brigs are manufactured by a european company which grew from the space industry in 1990 and in a short time have grown to be the most popular brand in Europe.

The company produces several product lines but Sirocco Marine import only two, Eagle and Falcon. All the boats they import are RIBs.
The Eagles are Italian-styled, and it shows. The hulls and accommodation modules, all in fibreglass, are white, as are the hypalon inflatable tubes (hypalon is the best tube material available). The chrome-framed instruments are fitted by the builder, not the engine manufacturer; the steering wheel is brushed stainless steel with hand-stitched vinyl rim, there’s a coolbox, cup holders, stainless steel grabrails aft, fabric grab handles on the tubes forward. The seat across the stern holds at least three; the helm seat holds two and it folds up if the driver wants to stand. In the back of the helm seat is a fold-down table so you can picnic on board in style. The area ahead of the steering module acts as a sunbed. There are moulded steps on the tube ends, a freshwater shower fed by the water tank beneath the floor.

This is a big boat – Sirocco’s Dylan Lopez has photographs of the prototype carrying 12 people in a factory demo. The first boats Sirocco delivered here were bought as chase boats for superyachts, but later sales have been as fast, high-style sports boats. One has gone to Perth where it will be used on the run to Rottnest Island.
The 645 is the flagship of the Brig brand. Sirocco also import the 380 and 500, similar to the 645 in that they are white, high-style, fully-fitted sport boats with high-quality mouldings.

The Falcon range is less ornate than the Eagles but the fundamentals are similar – mouldings in fibreglass, tubes of Hypalon. From the Falcon range, Sirocco bring in the 400, 450 and 500.
“The Falcons are more functional”, Dylan says, “for diving, fishing, towing the kids on a doughnut. You would be happy to throw the dive tanks in the front, happy to take the kids fishing, a simpler boat. “If the Eagles can be likened to BMWs, the Falcons are top-end VWs”.

Sirocco also builds and markets its own inflatables under the Sirocco brand name. The Sirocco range includes roll-up Tenders (2m and 2.5m); the Air Hull boats, featuring a revolutionary double-skin vee-bottom (2.2m- 4.5m) ; and fibreglass-hulled RIBs (2.4m-5.6m).
The Air Hull is unique to Sirocco. Most air floor boats have a tubular spine below the floor. The Sirocco system uses two skins with interconnected fibres which, when inflated, form a true vee bottom which improves ride and planing. A recent addition to the Sirocco range is the 2-metre Lite which, with seats and oars, weighs 10.1kg, less than half the weight of conventional inflatables of the same length.
You can’t help liking inflatables. As they are surrounded by a large, soft fender, an inflatable avoids inflicting damage on its inhabitants or indeed, on other boats. So when the kids, who have been out hot-dogging in the tender, return to the family boat there is no damage when they ram the landing platform or bounce into the hull side. As they invariably do. Those big tubes also generate stability.

On a RIB the tubes ride clear of the water at speed then, as the boat comes off the plane the tubes make contact with the water and impart great stability. This can be particularly handy in extreme weather when, if you are foolish enough to be caught offshore, your boat will float, and self-drain, if swamped. RIBs also corner flat, like a catamaran. And inflatables don’t weigh much. This matters when you have to push your boat off the beach, having forgotten to watch the falling tide.
It matters when you tow it be hind the mother boat or behind a car. “The 645, when fitted with an engine and all the ancillaries, weights about 750kg all up”, says Dylan. “A hemes solid glass boat of the same size weighs in at about twice that”. Dylan can tow the 645 behind his Subaru Liberty Outback.
